This phân was issued during the reign of Emperor Minh M?ng, the second ruler of the Nguy?n dynasty, whose reign extended from 1820 to 1841.
Zinc, a less noble metal than copper or gold, was commonly used for small denominations intended for daily transactions in the Vietnamese economy of the time. The zinc striking thus reflects the monetary role of this coin in popular exchanges under the imperial administration of the Nguy?n.
The reign of Minh M?ng was marked by an intense policy of administrative centralisation of Vietnamese territory, unified under Nguy?n authority since 1802. The emperor carried out a profound reorganisation of the provinces, strengthened the Mandarin hierarchy and relied on Confucian principles to govern. On the foreign front, he led several military campaigns, notably against the Kingdom of Cambodia, which he sought to progressively integrate into his sphere of influence, and maintained a policy of wariness towards Western influences, restricting the activity of Catholic missionaries on his territory. The period was also marked by persistent tensions with Siam over influence in Cambodia. Internally, regional revolts, particularly in mountainous areas and among certain minorities, were firmly suppressed. This context of imperial assertion and consolidation of central power forms the historical backdrop against which this coin was produced and put into circulation.
