On the external front, he led several military campaigns, notably against the Kingdom of Cambodia, which he sought to gradually bring into his sphere of influence, and maintained a policy of wariness toward Western influences, restricting the activities of Catholic missionaries within his territory. The period was also marked by persistent tensions with Siam over influence in Cambodia. Domestically, regional revolts, particularly in mountainous areas and among certain minorities, were suppressed with firmness.
