This 3 phân coin was issued during the reign of Emperor Minh M?ng, the second ruler of the Nguy?n dynasty, whose reign extended from 1820 to 1841.
The reign of Minh M?ng was characterized by an intense policy of administrative centralization of Vietnamese territory, unified under Nguy?n authority since 1802. The emperor carried out a profound reorganization of the provinces, reinforced the Mandarin hierarchy, and relied on Confucian principles to govern. On the external front, he led several military campaigns, notably against the Kingdom of Cambodia, which he sought to gradually bring into his sphere of influence, and maintained a policy of wariness toward Western influences, restricting the activities of Catholic missionaries within his territory. The period was also marked by persistent tensions with Siam over influence in Cambodia. Domestically, regional revolts, particularly in mountainous areas and among certain minorities, were suppressed with firmness. This context of imperial assertion and consolidation of central power forms the historical backdrop against which this coin was produced and circulated.
