This 2 euro commemorative coin was issued by the Vatican in 2020 to mark the centenary of the birth of Pope John Paul II. The coin is bimetallic, with a nickel-brass center and a cupro-nickel ring. It weighs 8.5 grams and has a diameter of 25.75 millimeters, with a thickness of 2.20 millimeters.
The coin's design depicts Pope John Paul II, the house where he was born and the basilica located near his birthplace in Wadowice, Poland. A semi-circular inscription, "PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II", appears in the upper left of the design. The years "1920 2020" and the mint mark "R" are visible on the right. The name of the issuing country, "CITTA' DEL VATICANO", is inscribed in a semicircle at the bottom of the coin. Below the image of the basilica are the artist's name "G. TITOTTO" and the engraver's initials "M.A.C. INC" (Maria Angela Cassol).
The mintage of this coin is 74,000 copies. The coin is delivered in an official blister pack. The edge is reeded and bears the inscription of a 2 followed by two stars, repeated six times alternating upright and inverted.
