This 5 tenga was issued by the Khanate of Khiva, in the territory of present-day Uzbekistan. The coin is associated with the reign of Sayyid Abdullah II, the last khan of Khiva, who exercised power in a context of strong political instability, notably in cooperation with General Junaid Khan. The strike is dated between 1918 and 1920, a period of major transition in Central Asia.
From a historical perspective, this coin bears witness to a pivotal phase for the Khanate of Khiva. Weakened by internal tensions and the rise of Bolshevik forces in the region, the khanate saw its independence threatened. Sayyid Abdullah II attempted to maintain his authority in the face of growing external pressures. Junaid Khan, a Turkmen leader and dominant military figure, played a decisive role in the defence of the khanate against the Soviet advance. Despite these efforts, the Khanate of Khiva was dissolved in 1920 with the establishment of the Khorezm People's Soviet Republic, marking the end of this political entity.
This monetary issue thus constitutes one of the last testimonies to the sovereignty of the khanate, making it a numismatic object of major historical interest.
