This banknote is an unissued 2-dollar bill from the Citizen's Bank of Louisiana. It dates back to the 1860s. This type of banknote was used as a private means of payment in Louisiana, in the absence of federal banknotes issued by the US Treasury at that time.
The Citizen's Bank of Louisiana, founded in 1833, was an important bank of its time before experiencing financial difficulties and going bankrupt in 1843. Despite this event, some of its banknotes, or "remainders", continued to circulate or be distributed in the following decades, particularly during the 1860s.
This banknote bears witness to the local economic history of Louisiana, in particular its pre-Civil War private banking system and its cotton-based economy.
Its dimensions are 189 mm in length and 77 mm in width.
