This one-dollar banknote was issued by the Confederate States of America on June 2, 1862.
Design: The front of the banknote features a complex allegorical scene. In the center, a female figure represents America, holding a cornucopia overflowing with agricultural products, symbolizing the wealth and fertility of the South. To her left, a sailor leans on an anchor, evoking the importance of maritime trade for the Confederacy. To her right, a steam train symbolizes technological and industrial progress. The face value, '1', is repeated in each corner of the banknote. The inscription 'Fundable in Eight Per Cent Stock of the Confederate States' indicates that the banknote could be exchanged for state bonds at an interest rate of 8%. The signatures 'For Register' and 'For Treasurer' suggest that the banknote required the approval of these two officials.
Reverse: The back of the banknote is blank of any inscription or illustration.
Printer: The banknote was printed by Hoyer & Ludwig, a printer based in Richmond, Virginia, who produced many banknotes for the Confederacy.
Material: This banknote is printed on paper.
Particularities: This type of banknote was issued in large quantities by the Confederacy to finance its war efforts. Due to inflation and economic uncertainty, the value of these banknotes fluctuated considerably during the Civil War.
