Description

The 10 dollar bill from the Canal Bank, issued in New Orleans, is a testament to 19th-century American banking history. This bill, dating from the period 1841-1895, represents a face value of ten dollars.

The front of the bill features the inscription "CANAL BANK" in capital letters, highlighting the issuing institution. It also reads "The New Orleans Canal & Banking Comp.? will pay TEN DOLLARS to the bearer on demand". The mention of the place and date of issue, "New Orleans, _______________ 18____", is also present, indicating that the date was completed manually upon issue.

The back of the bill is adorned with several distinct visual elements. A vignette depicts the bank building, attesting to the importance and solidity of the institution. An eagle, a symbol of the nation, is placed on the left. On the right, a standing female figure adds an allegorical dimension to the design. The inscriptions "CANAL BANK" and "NEW-ORLEANS" reaffirm the identity of the issuer and its place of origin.

This bill was printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, a New York-based printing company that was active between 1847 and 1858. The dimensions of the bill are 182 mm in length and 79 mm in width.
