Althea Gibson, honored on this coin, was a pioneering athlete in several sports, being the first black athlete to break color barriers at the highest level of tennis and professional golf. During the 1950s, she won 11 Grand Slam titles, with victories at Wimbledon, the US Open, and Roland Garros.
