Description

The 2025 quarter dollar, minted in Philadelphia, is dedicated to Althea Gibson. This commemorative coin is part of the American Women Quarters series, which aims to honor American women who have made significant contributions in various fields.

The coin is composed of copper and nickel, weighs 5.670 grams, and has a diameter of 24.26 mm (0.955 inch). Its edge is reeded.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, a design originally created by Laura Gardin Fraser for the 1932 quarter, issued to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. The inscriptions on this side are "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the year of issue "2025".

The reverse of the coin depicts Althea Gibson, holding a racket in one hand and a tennis ball in the other, standing near a net on a tennis court, ready to play. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "ALTHEA GIBSON", "QUARTER DOLLAR" and "TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION".

This coin marks the final year of the American Women Quarters series. Althea Gibson, honored on this coin, was a pioneering athlete in several sports, being the first black athlete to break color barriers at the highest level of tennis and professional golf. During the 1950s, she won 11 Grand Slam titles, with victories at Wimbledon, the US Open, and Roland Garros.
