This is a 25-cent coin, or quarter dollar, issued by the United States in 2025. This coin commemorates Althea Gibson, a prominent figure in American sports, notably as the first Black athlete to break through in the world of tennis and professional golf.
The coin is minted in Denver, as indicated by the "D" mint mark. It is composed of copper and nickel, with a mass of 5.670 grams and a diameter of 24.26 mm (0.955 inch). The edge of the coin is reeded.
The reverse of the coin depicts Althea Gibson holding a racket in one hand and a tennis ball in the other, standing near a net on a tennis court. The inscriptions include ?UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,? ?E PLURIBUS UNUM,? ?ALTHEA GIBSON,? ?QUARTER DOLLAR,? and ?TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION.?
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, based on an original design by Laura Gardin Fraser created for the 1932 quarter dollar commemorating the bicentennial of his birth. The inscriptions on the obverse are ?LIBERTY,? ?IN GOD WE TRUST,? and ?2025.? It is noteworthy that this coin is part of the American Women Quarters series, which celebrates the contributions of various American women to the country's history.
This issue marks the final year of the American Women Quarters series of collectible coins.
