Description

The 2 hryvni banknote, issued by Ukraine in 2013, is a banknote from the series commemorating Prince Yaroslav the Wise and St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv. Its dimensions are 118 mm in length and 63 mm in width.

The front of the banknote highlights the portrait of Yaroslav the Wise, Grand Duke of Kyiv from 1019 to 1054. Under his reign, the code of "Justice of Rus" was composed and adopted, marking an important step in the legal development of ancient Rus. It was also under his leadership that Christianity became definitively established, promoting the cultural flourishing of the region. Yaroslav the Wise rests in St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv.

The inscription on the banknote is in Cyrillic script. The back of the banknote features a representation of St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv, a historical and architectural monument dating from the first half of the 11th century. This cathedral, adorned with murals, is world-renowned. Its construction dates back to the golden age of Kyiv Rus', where it was erected to serve as the metropolitan cathedral, the main church of Rus. It was erected on the very spot where Yaroslav won a decisive victory over the Pechenegs. Furthermore, Yaroslav founded the first library of Rus there.

This banknote was produced by the Workshops of the National Bank of Ukraine.
