San Marino's second castle (or tower) is located on a hill called "della Cesta", the highest point of Mount Titano at 756 metres above sea level. It was already an ancient watchtower in Roman times and the name Cesta may come from "cista", which was a chest used by the Romans to store sacred furnishings. The fifteenth-century tower is pentagonal in shape and also bears the name Fratta, which may come from "afrattata", a name that indicates the band of hedges outside the walls. Between 1925 and 1935 the medieval fortress was restored and rebuilt with terraces, walkways, passageways, accommodation and a guardhouse. It now houses the Museum of Ancient Weapons. The 1 euro coin depicts a splendid view of the second tower from 2017, the year in which the subjects depicted on the national sides of the euro coins were changed.
In 2017 San Marino changed all its national visuals on the euro coins it issues. The 2-euro depicts a detail from Urbinelli's painting with San Marino bearing the three "Towers" of the small republic. The 1 euro is illustrated by the castle of Cesta, often called the Second Tower. The 50 euro coin features a portrait of San Marino by Restrosi. The 20-cent coin features the three Towers of Mount Titano, the symbol of San Marino. The facade of San Francisco Church is depicted on the 10-cent coin and that of San Quirino on the 5-cent coin. The 2-cent coin features the town gate, while the 1-cent coin has the San Marino coat of arms as its illustration.
Brillant Universel stands for Brilliant Uncirculated. These coins are minted using new tools to ensure superior quality. They are more highly polished than standard coins and have never been put into circulation.
