Dedicated to the 530th anniversary of Ghirlandaio's death, it celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance, Domenico Ghirlandaio. This rare coin, delivered in its official blister, is struck in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality, guaranteeing exceptional conservation for collectors.
Domenico Bigordi, known as Ghirlandaio because he was the son of an artisan famous for his hair "garlands", is considered one of the great protagonists of the Renaissance and the city of Florence in the time of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Around 1480 in particular, he became the de facto official portrait painter of Florentine high society. Thanks to his precise, pleasant and fast style, he is best known for his large cycles of frescoes, including the Stories of Saint Francis, commissioned to the artist by the Florentine banker Francesco Sassetti, who entrusted him with the fresco of the family chapel in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence. The altarpiece above the altar, "The Adoration of the Shepherds" in tempera on panel, is the worthy completion of his grandiose work. The coin's design is taken from a detail of the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Sassetti Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Trìnita in Florence.
This bi-metallic coin, with a Nordic gold center and a cupronickel ring, measures 25.75 mm in diameter and weighs 8.5 g. Its edge, milled and inscribed with a "2" followed by a star repeated six times, gives it a distinctive cachet. The mintage is limited to 56,000 copies, making it a particularly sought-after edition for collectors of commemorative coins.
Thanks to its association with such a renowned artist as Ghirlandaio, this 2 Euro San Marino 2024 coin has a unique artistic and historical value, while also being a tribute to the cultural richness of the Italian Renaissance.
Edge: milled and inscribed with a 2 followed by a star, all repeated six times alternating upright and inverted.
