The 2 euro commemorative coin from San Marino, issued in 2008, celebrates the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. This bimetallic coin has a diameter of 25.75 millimeters and a weight of 8.5 grams.
The obverse of the coin depicts five stylized human silhouettes, evoking the diversity of cultures and communities. Sacred symbols and texts from different religious traditions are integrated into the design, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding. The name of the issuing state, "SAN MARINO", is inscribed in an arc above the figures, accompanied by the year "2008". The initials "E.L.F", corresponding to the signature of the engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini, are discreetly affixed to the side, as well as the letter "R" which identifies the Rome mint. At the bottom of the coin, the inscription "ANNO EUROPEO DEL DIALOGO INTERCULTURALE" can be read, recalling the central theme of this commemorative issue.
The reverse of the coin conforms to the common face of 2 euro coins, created by Luc Luycx. It features a map of the European continent, symbolically linked to the twelve stars of the European Union. The face value, "2 EURO", is clearly indicated.
The edge of the coin is finely milled and has an inscription repeated six times: "2 *". This inscription alternates between an orientation from bottom to top and from top to bottom, adding a distinctive feature to this commemorative coin. The coin's edging is bimetallic, combining two different alloys to create a visual contrast and enhance the security of the currency.
