This 2 euro commemorative coin, issued by San Marino in 2005, celebrates the World Year of Physics. The coin is composed of two metals. It weighs 8.5 grams and its diameter is 25.75 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features, in its central part, a representation of Galileo, the famous physicist, in front of his work table. He is depicted using a telescope. The year "2005" is discreetly integrated into the table. Above the figure of Galileo, we can read the name of the issuing state, "SAN MARINO". Below, the inscription "ANNO MONDIALE DELLA FISICA" recalls the commemorated event. The letter "R", symbol of the Rome mint, and the initials "LDS" of the engraver Luciana De Simoni, are also present on this face. The twelve stars of the European Community are arranged in a circle in the outer ring, separated by a curve evoking the trajectory of a star.
The reverse of the coin features a stylized map of the fifteen states of the European Union, appearing as united. This map is superimposed on a dynamic composition formed by the twelve stars of the European Union. The inscription "2 EURO LL", indicating the face value and the initials of the engraver Luc Luycx, completes the design of this face.
The edge of the coin features a fine and regular engraving. The inscription "2 *", repeated six times, alternates its orientation, appearing once from bottom to top, then from top to bottom.
