The Euro coin set of Portugal, dated 2004, brings together all eight denominations of the current Portuguese series, ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. The coins are presented in their Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality, which testifies to a careful minting and a particular conservation, aimed at preserving the original shine of the coins.
Each coin has specific characteristics in terms of dimensions, weight and composition. The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins are generally composed of steel covered with copper, giving them a distinctive reddish color. The 10, 20 and 50 cent coins are made from a yellow-colored alloy called Nordic gold. Finally, the 1 and 2 euro coins are bimetallic, combining two different alloys: a central part and an outer ring.
The national sides of the Portuguese coins present a common motif: the royal seal of 1134, surrounded by the castles of Portugal and the shields with five points, symbols of the country. The legend "Portugal" is also present, as well as the year "2004" of the issue. The design is the work of Vítor Manuel Fernandes dos Santos. The common faces of the coins, for their part, display the standardized designs used by all countries in the euro zone, representing the face value and a map of Europe.
The set itself is designed to protect and showcase the coins. It can be made of different materials, such as cardboard, plastic or wood, and generally has a design specific to the year of issue and the country concerned. The interior of the set is arranged to keep each coin in place and prevent friction or shocks that could alter their state of preservation.
