 In 1974, the April 25th revolution in Portugal ended 17,499 days of dictatorship. Changes included a new constitution, universal suffrage, the creation of political parties, recognition of the independence of the colonies, equal rights for married women, freedom of association,
 association, and progress in the areas of health, education, and labor law. The commemorative coin highlights the importance of the carnation, a symbol of freedom.
