Coin Pièce United Kingdom 1 pound Copper-Nickel 2020 Llantrisant

This 1 Pound coin was issued in 2020 by the Royal Mint of Llantrisant in the United Kingdom, as part of the Music Legends series, dedicated to the great figures of British music. It pays tribute to Elton John, one of the most iconic artists on the world music scene, whose career spans several decades.

Struck in copper-nickel, this coin has a weight of 28.28 grams and a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, giving it a generous size and comfortable handling, characteristic of standard commemorative coins in the United Kingdom.

The obverse features the official portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, depicted using the effigy created by Jody Clark, accompanied by the customary inscriptions found on contemporary British issues. The reverse is entirely dedicated to Elton John, with a design specifically created for this series, incorporating visual elements characteristic of the artist and his particularly recognisable stage universe.

The Royal Mint's Music Legends series aims to immortalise, from a numismatic perspective, artists who have had a lasting impact on British and international musical culture. Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947 in Pinner, England, is particularly known for works such as Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer and Your Song. His contribution to pop and rock music has earned him numerous distinctions, including a knighthood granted by the British Crown in 1998, which further strengthens the symbolic link between this artist and an official monetary issue from the United Kingdom.
