This 100 Tenge coin is issued by Kazakhstan in 2025 and is part of the series dedicated to the country's wildlife. It depicts the Qulan (Qul??), also known as the Central Asian wild ass, an iconic equid of the Kazakh steppes whose population is currently considered vulnerable. This mammal is one of the most prominent symbols of the region's biodiversity, which justifies its representation on an official monetary medium.
The coin is made in bimetal, a minting technique combining two distinct alloys within the same blank, characterised by an outer ring and a central insert of different metallic compositions. This process gives the coin a contrasted visual appearance and also serves as a recognised anti-counterfeiting security feature in contemporary coin production.
On the technical side, the coin has a diameter of 24.5 mm and a weight of 6.45 grams. These dimensional characteristics correspond to the usual standards for circulating coins of this format, ensuring compatibility with automatic recognition systems.
The obverse of the coin classically bears the inscriptions relating to the face value of 100 tenge and the year of issue 2025, in accordance with the practices of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. The reverse is devoted to the depiction of the Qulan, an animal whose image is rendered with a concern for naturalistic accuracy, faithful to the zoological representations of the species Equus hemionus onager or the local subspecies.
This issue is part of a Kazakh tradition of promoting national natural heritage through numismatic production, reflecting the interest of monetary authorities in raising environmental awareness through official coinage.
