This 20 Mark silver coin was issued by the German Democratic Republic in 1990, commemorating a major historical event: the opening of the Brandenburg Gate, which took place on 22 December 1989. This symbolic event, which occurred shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, marks the gradual reunification of the two Germanys and stands as one of the most significant moments in contemporary European history.
The coin was struck at Mint A, corresponding to the Berlin mint, which is also the issuing institution of this currency. The Brandenburg Gate, the iconic neoclassical monument of the German capital, is depicted on this issue, giving it a strong historical and symbolic significance linked to the political context of the time.
From a technical standpoint, the coin is composed of silver with a fineness of 999 thousandths, which corresponds to pure silver. It has a weight of 18.2 grams and a diameter of 33 millimetres, dimensions characteristic of the large commemorative coins issued by the GDR during this period.
This issue is part of the last series of commemorative coins produced by the German Democratic Republic, which would be dissolved in October 1990. As such, it represents not only a high-quality numismatic piece, but also a rare historical document, struck in the very last months of existence of a state that would soon disappear. The use of high-purity silver and the striking characteristics of the Berlin mint bear witness to the particular care taken with this commemorative issue.
