Description
This 3 Mark silver coin was issued in 1913 by the Kingdom of Prussia, as part of the celebrations marking the centenary of the Wars of Liberation (Befreiungskriege), commemorating the wars fought against Napoleon Bonaparte between 1813 and 1815. These conflicts, particularly significant in Germanic history, led to the defeat of the French Empire and the reshaping of the European order at the Congress of Vienna.
The coin is struck in 900? fine silver, corresponding to an alloy composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, a standard commonly used for German coins of this era under the Wilhelmine Empire. It has a weight of 16.67 grams and a diameter of 33 millimetres, dimensions consistent with the specifications of the German imperial monetary system in force at the time.
The obverse of this coin traditionally features the portrait of Wilhelm II, the last Kaiser of the German Empire and King of Prussia, accompanied by dynastic inscriptions and his title. The reverse is adorned with emblems and legends commemorating the anniversary of the Wars of Liberation, reflecting the Prussian and German nationalism characteristic of the early 20th century.
This issue was produced to the extent of 2,000,000 specimens, a relatively substantial mintage that reflects the importance placed on this commemorative event by the Prussian authorities. Although this mintage volume is significant, this coin remains a precious numismatic witness to the end of the German imperial era, struck just one year before the outbreak of World War I, which would profoundly transform the European political landscape.
