This 50 euro gold coin was issued by the Monnaie de Paris in 2021 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lucky Luke, the famous comic strip character created by Morris in 1946. This lone cowboy, who "shoots faster than his shadow", is one of the iconic figures of Franco-Belgian comics and is here the subject of a limited official strike.
The coin is struck in 999? pure gold, corresponding to very high purity fine gold. It belongs to the quarter-ounce format, with a precise weight of 7.78 grams and a diameter of 22 millimetres. It carries a face value of 50 euros, guaranteed by the French State.
The coin is struck by workshop A of the Monnaie de Paris, an institution whose monetary history spans several centuries and which remains one of the world's leading references in the minting of coins and collectible medals. The letter A appearing on the coin identifies this Parisian workshop precisely.
The mintage is limited to 500 pieces, making it a particularly exclusive issue. This rarity is characteristic of the series dedicated to major figures of popular culture that the Monnaie de Paris regularly incorporates into its minting programme, alongside institutional or heritage issues.
The year 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of Lucky Luke, who first appeared in the album La Arizona published in the journal Spirou in 1946. This coin thus forms part of a numismatic approach to highlighting the cultural heritage of European comics.
