The 1000 Francs banknote from New Caledonia, dated 1963, is a specimen issued by the Banque de l'Indochine. This banknote, measuring 208 × 119 mm, features motifs and inscriptions in Latin.
The front of the banknote is multicolored and depicts a market scene in the background, located on the left. On the right, an indigenous woman is depicted seated. The inscriptions include "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" and "MILLE FRANCS", as well as the mention "NOUMÉA". The names of the artists, L. JONAS FEC. and G. BELTRAND SC., also appear, indicating the creators Lucien Hector Jonas and Georges Léon Égalité Beltrand.
The back of the banknote, also multicolored, features an indigenous woman on the left and an indigenous hunter on the right. It includes the inscriptions "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" and "1000", as well as a legal warning: "ARTICLE 139 OF THE PENAL CODE PUNISHES WITH FORCED LABOR THOSE WHO HAVE COUNTERFEITED OR FALSIFIED BANK NOTES AUTHORIZED BY LAW". The names of the engravers and designers, L. JONAS FEC. and G. BELTRAND SC., are reversed compared to the front, indicating that Georges Léon Égalité Beltrand is the designer and Lucien Hector Jonas the engraver.
The printer of this banknote is the Banque de France. This specimen reflects the economic and cultural context of New Caledonia in the early 1960s, reflecting scenes of local life and the emblematic figures of the region.
