The 5 euro Malta 2023 "Knights of the Past" is the third and final commemorative coin created thanks to the close collaboration between the Central Bank of Malta and Germania Mint. The series of bullions is a modern reference to the traditions of the Order of Malta and its ups and downs in European history.

The obverse of the coin depicts a knight in ornate armour, watching over the freedom and unity of Europe. Behind him are the watchtower of Valletta and Fort Saint-Ange in Birgu, which was the Order's headquarters during the Great Siege of Malta. The reverse of the coin once again features the Central Bank of Malta's coat of arms on a shield held by a Maltese knight.

The mintage of the coin, sold with a certificate of authenticity and a blister pack, is 15,000 pieces.
