IPZS highlights Italian excellence by offering a coin dedicated to an Italian delicacy that has gone around the world: Nutella
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Ferrero group, the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato (IPZS), the Italian Mint, has issued three versions of a coin dedicated to the flagship product of the food group, Nutella. Founded at the end of the war by Pietro Ferrero in Alba in Piedmont, Ferrero first produced a kind of hard paste made from hazelnuts and a little chocolate. At that time chocolate was scarce and hazelnuts were produced by the farmers in the area. Legend has it that during the scorching summer of 1949 Michele, son of Pietro, began to sell this product which could not stand the heat and became soft. For this reason he packaged it in small glass jars. Due to the success of the product, the recipe was adapted with the addition of cocoa butter so that the texture would not harden. Called "Gianduja" and then "Supercrema", the paste took the name "Nutella" in 1964 when international sales developed.
To illustrate these pieces, IPZS uses the traditional jar containing the spread. The difference between each version is the colouring of the lid of the jar. The colours (green, white and red) are those of the Italian flag. On the reverse side, behind the ?5 face value, is the entrance to the historic Ferrero factory in Alba. Each version is produced in a mintage of 15,000 pieces, 10,000 in individual blister packs and 5,000 in a box. Each piece is made of 925 silver ? and has a weight of 18 g. with a diameter of 32 millimetres.
