This anonymous paisa, issued under the reign of Dule Singh, comes from the princely state of Sailana, located in the Malwa region of central India.
Sailana was a small princely state under British suzerainty, integrated into the sphere of influence of the Indian Empire. During the period covered by this issue, the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was a major event on the subcontinent, leading to a profound reorganisation of British administration with the transfer of power from the East India Company to the British Crown in 1858. Sailana, like many princely states in Malwa, maintained a relationship of loyalty towards the British authorities. Dule Singh ruled the state during this period of transition and the progressive consolidation of colonial power, while retaining partial administrative and monetary autonomy, symbolised by the continuation of local issues such as this copper paisa.
