To mark the 2020 European football championship, which has been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic, artist Thomas Serres has designed a motif for this €20 silver coin for the German Monetary Institute. For the first time, the championship will be played across the whole of Europe and even in Asia, in Baku.
A coin and a football usually share a common geometric feature: they are round in shape. The designer took this aspect into account when designing the coin, conceiving it entirely as a ball. The title of the tournament and the various venues originally planned were inscribed in a circle on the design. The names of the host cities engraved on the coin are as follows: Baku Dublin Copenhagen Rome Amsterdam Bucharest London Glasgow Bilbao Munich St Petersburg and Budapest. The inscription on the edge reads "EIN TURNIER FUER EUROPA ? EIN TURNIER FUER FAN", which translates as "A tournament for Europe, a tournament for the fans".
Because of the pandemic, changes were made several times in the organisation of the European Championship. Cities such as Bilbao and Dublin were dropped from the list of host cities following disagreements with UEFA. Despite this, their names remain on the coin.
The decision to keep the name "UEFA Euro de football 2020" having been taken by the organisation, Germany has also decided to keep the year 2020 in which the coin was originally to be issued. Before the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, no one would have thought that these major sporting events could be postponed by an entire year.
