Superb German commemorative coin struck in 1990 to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (1122?1190), an iconic figure of the Holy Roman Empire.
The obverse features the federal eagle with the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND · 1990 · 10 DEUTSCHE MARK. The reverse shows the crowned emperor holding the orb and scepter, rising above the walls of a castle, with his dates of birth and death. The smooth edge bears the inscription E HONOR IMPERII.
Engraved by Eugen Ruhl. Medal alignment (??). Demonetized on December 31, 2001, this coin is now exclusively a collector's item.
