Because Normandy would not have been liberated without the Allied nations, the Monnaie de Paris wanted to pay tribute to this historical event through several stories. The coins in this collection are dedicated to 4 soldiers from the 4 major Allied nations who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. These 4 fictional heroes embody the story of soldiers who actually fought during the Normandy landings.

Richard, a British Glider (glider infantry) from the Airlanding Brigade is part of the 6th Airborne (British and Canadian). He landed on the night of June 6, 1944, in a glider east of Sword Beach. He is pictured here in front of Pegasus Bridge after the successful completion of Operation Deadstick. The glider in which he landed is in the background under the trees. On the night of June 5-6, 1944, during Operation Tonga, units of the 6th Division were the first to fight in the Normandy landings. They were dropped by gliders behind Sword Beach to secure the eastern flank of the Allied landing zone. Their objectives included the capture of Pegasus Bridge and the bridge over the Orne, as well as the destruction of the Merville battery, all of which were achieved. Operation Tonga continued with the parachuting of other units of the division to hold the sector and face German counter-offensives.
The reverse of this coin highlights all the Allied countries that officially participated in the Normandy landings, surrounding the face value and the mention RF. Clockwise: Free France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Australia, United States, Norway, United Kingdom,
Czechoslovakia, Canada, Belgium. The stars under the flags are also a tribute to the "Liberty Road", kilometer markers marking the route followed by the 3rd US Army for the liberation of France to Luxembourg.
