Launched in 2017, the Aviation and History collection honors the Curtiss P-40 this year.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was the third most produced fighter aircraft in the United States during World War II. It first flew in 1938 and remained the only valuable and available fighter in large numbers in the American aviation until 1943. It served very honorably for most of the conflict, thanks to its low cost, ease of maintenance and great robustness.
The obverse of this coin depicts it in combat over a rice field against a Japanese plane, symbolizing its involvement in the Pacific during World War II.
The common reverse to the series presents two pilot profiles symbolizing different eras and types of use, civil and military. Many aircraft are represented in the sky also marking different eras and uses, a tribute to the history of aviation.
Pilot and comic book author specializing in aviation Romain Hugault has once again collaborated with the master engraver of the Monnaie de Paris Joaquin Jimenez for the development of this new series of gold and silver coins.
