The obverse of the medal depicts Napoleon III, wearing a spiked helmet, chained to a collar bearing the inscription "SEDAN". He is depicted smoking a cigarette. A Latin inscription runs around the effigy, bearing the words "NAPOLEON III the MISERABLE" and "80000 PRISONERS".
The reverse of the medal features an owl.
Struck in bronze, this medal weighs 7.6 grams. Its diameter is 27 mm and its thickness is 1.7 mm. The piece was issued in France in 1870.
