This numismatic series includes the eight euro coins issued by France in 2002, ranging from 1 cent to 2 euros. Each coin features a national side specific to France, while respecting the standardized common European side.
The 1, 2, and 5 cent coins feature the portrait of Marianne, symbol of the French Republic, with a Phrygian cap, engraved by Fabienne Courtiade. The motif is surrounded by twelve stars representing the European Union, as well as the year 2002 and the initials RF for République Française.
On the 10, 20, and 50 cent coins, we find the motif of the sower, an emblematic figure of French monetary history, here revisited by Laurent Jorio. This drawing represents a woman sowing seeds, symbolizing prosperity and the future. The motif is also framed by the twelve European stars, the year, and the initials RF.
The 1 and 2 euro coins feature a stylized tree, the work of Joaquin Jimenez, representing life, growth, and perpetuity. This tree is inscribed in a hexagon, a geometric shape often used to symbolize France. The twelve European stars, the year, and the initials RF complete the design.
All the coins are minted in different alloys: the 1, 2, and 5 cent coins are made of copper-plated steel, the 10, 20, and 50 cent coins are made of Nordic gold, and the 1 and 2 euro coins are bimetallic, combining two different alloys.
This 2002 series marks the official launch of the euro in France and represents a testimony to the country's entry into the euro zone.
