Description

The 1992 ?Jean Monnet? 100 francs coin is part of the French commemorative silver coin series of the Fifth Republic. It pays tribute to Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the European construction, at a time when Europe reached a turning point with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty that same year. This issue thus takes on a historical and political dimension.

The obverse features the portrait of Jean Monnet, accompanied by symbolic elements related to Europe, such as stars or motifs evoking European unity. The design highlights his role in cooperation between nations and the building of a united Europe. The legend ?RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE? frames the composition, affirming the coin's institutional framework.

The reverse displays the iconic motif of the 100 francs silver series: a stylized tree topped with a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom and the Republic. The foliage incorporates the motto ?LIBERTÉ · ÉGALITÉ · FRATERNITÉ?, along with the face value 100 F and the year 1992. This design, signed by Michel Durand-Mégret, ensures visual consistency with other issues in the series.

From a technical standpoint, this coin is struck in 900? silver, with a weight of 15 grams and a diameter of 31 mm, which are the standard specifications for 100 francs silver coins of that period. It is produced by the Monnaie de Paris with high-quality minting, although it was mostly kept by collectors rather than actually used in circulation.

The mintage is high, as with most issues in this series, making the coin relatively accessible on the numismatic market. It was demonetized in 2002, upon the introduction of the euro.

From a numismatic perspective, the 1992 100 francs Jean Monnet is of particular interest due to its European theme, directly linked to a key period in contemporary history. It perfectly complements the other types in the series (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, Human Rights, etc.).

Finally, for collectors, this coin represents a powerful symbol: the birth of modern Europe. Accessible, aesthetic, and meaningful, it is an essential piece for any collection of contemporary French coins.
