The 100 Francs ?La Fayette? coin issued in 1987 is part of the major series of French silver commemorative coins of the Fifth Republic. It celebrates the Marquis de La Fayette, a major figure in French and American history, a symbol of the ideals of freedom and republican commitment. This issue is associated with the theme of Equality, one of the pillars of the national motto.
Iconographically, the obverse presents the portrait of General La Fayette, depicted in profile in military attire. This effigy highlights his historical role, both in the French Revolution and in the independence of the United States. The inscription ?RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE? frames the composition, accompanied by the mention of the character, reinforcing the official and commemorative dimension of the coin.
The reverse features the emblematic motif of the series: a stylized tree surmounted by a Phrygian cap, symbol of freedom and the Republic. Around it are the motto ?LIBERTÉ · ÉGALITÉ · FRATERNITÉ?, the face value 100 F and the year 1987. This composition, signed by Michel Durand-Mégret, visually translates the republican ideals in a modern and balanced aesthetic.
From a technical point of view, the coin is struck in 900? silver, with a weight of 15 grams and a diameter of 31 mm, standard characteristics of the 100 Francs silver series of this period. The minting is industrial, carried out by the Monnaie de Paris, although these coins were mostly kept rather than actually used in circulation.
The mintage is significant, with approximately 4.8 million copies, which makes this coin relatively accessible on the numismatic market. It was demonetized in 2002, during the transition to the euro, like all franc coins.
From a numismatic point of view, the 100 Francs La Fayette occupies a central place in the series, alongside the Liberté, Fraternité or Charlemagne types. Its interest lies in the combination of a major historical figure, a strong republican iconography and its silver composition, which gives it intrinsic value.
Finally, for the collector, this coin represents an excellent balance between accessibility and historical significance. It embodies both the ideals of the Enlightenment and the revolutionary heritage, while being part of the last major silver issues of the French franc before the arrival of the euro.
