The 100 Francs ?Charlemagne? coin issued in 1990 is part of the series of French commemorative coins of the Fifth Republic. It celebrates the 1190th anniversary of Charlemagne?s coronation (800?1990), a major figure in European history often considered the ?father of Europe?. This issue illustrates France?s desire to promote its historical heritage through highly symbolic circulation coins.
From an iconographic point of view, the coin is distinguished by a rich and balanced composition. The reverse features a crowned portrait of Charlemagne, inspired by a modern engraving by designer Carola Tietz. The effigy, frontal and imposing, reinforces the imperial dimension of the character, accompanied by the legend ?CHARLEMAGNE 742-814?.
The obverse adopts a more symbolic approach with the Carolingian monogram, surrounded by two laurel branches. The whole is framed by the republican motto ?LIBERTÉ · ÉGALITÉ · FRATERNITÉ?, as well as by the mention ?RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE?, the face value and the year 1990. This duality between imperial symbol and republican framework perfectly illustrates the dialogue between history and modernity.
From a technical point of view, this coin is struck in 900? silver, with a diameter of 31 mm and a weight of 15 grams. It belongs to the category of commemorative circulating coins, although it has been mainly kept by collectors. It is manufactured by the Monnaie de Paris, with careful industrial-quality striking.
The mintage is relatively large, with nearly 5 million copies, which explains its frequent presence on the numismatic market. However, despite this wide distribution, it retains a constant appeal thanks to its precious metal and its strong historical theme.
Demonetized in 2005, this coin no longer has a face value in use, but is still sought after for its intrinsic silver value and its historical interest. It is a classic of contemporary French coin collections, often integrated into the series of 100 silver francs from the 1980s?1990s.
Finally, for the collector, this coin represents an excellent compromise between accessibility and historical richness. It embodies both the memory of Carolingian Europe and the last major silver issues of the French franc before the arrival of the euro.
