The 1000 Djibouti Franc banknote, issued in 1938, features a brown and green obverse print with a yellow underprint, complemented by black serial numbers. The obverse of the banknote depicts a seated woman, topless, facing right. The background illustrates a lively market scene with people exchanging goods and camels. A watermark area is located in the center of the banknote. The inscriptions are in French, Arabic, and Amharic.
The following inscriptions can be read: BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE, MILLE FRANCS, DJIBOUTI, LE PRESIDENT, LE DIRECTEUR GÉNERAL, as well as the face values in Arabic and Latin numerals. The names of L. JONAS and G. BELTRAND are also present, indicating their respective roles as designer and engraver.
The reverse of the banknote is printed in multicolored with an equally multicolored underprint. It depicts a woman carrying a basket on the left and a man holding a spear on the right. The background shows a landscape with a lake, trees, and mountains. The texts are also in French, Arabic, and Amharic.
The inscriptions on the reverse include: BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE, followed by a legal mention: L'ARTICLE 139 DU CODE PENAL PUNIT DES TRAVAUX FORCÈS CEUX QUI AURONT CONTREFAIT OU FALSIFIÉ LES BILLETS DE BANQUE AUTORISÉE PAR LA LOI. The face value of 1000 is repeated, and the names of L. JONAS and G. BELTRAND are mentioned again.
The banknote's watermark represents a native's head.
