Description

This coin was issued during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song dynasty, between 1068 and 1077, during the Xining era.

The inscription is written in seal script (zhuanshu), an archaic and formal style of writing traditionally associated with official seals and frequently used on imperial coin issues. This choice reflects the particular care given to calligraphy and the symbolism of power under the Song dynasty.

The reign of Shenzong (1067?1085) was marked by the ambitious reforms of Wang Anshi, a senior official and the principal architect of the New Policies (Xinfa). These measures aimed to strengthen state finances, improve military organisation, and increase the administrative efficiency of the empire. They nevertheless provoked strong opposition within the court, which was divided between reformers and conservatives. On the external front, the Song dynasty had to contend with the power of the Liao dynasty to the north and the Western Xia to the west, with whom border tensions remained recurrent. During the Yuanfeng era, Shenzong sought in particular to strengthen the Song military position in the north-western regions, leading to several costly campaigns against the Western Xia. This period of reforms, political rivalries, and strategic challenges forms the historical context in which this coin was produced and put into circulation.
