Description
This coin was issued during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty, during the Xuanhe era (between 1119 and 1125).
The coin features an inscription written in seal script (zhuanshu), characteristic of certain calligraphic issues associated with the reign of Huizong, who was renowned for his mastery of the art of writing.
From a historical perspective, the period 1119?1125 represents a particularly critical phase for the Northern Song Dynasty. Huizong, more drawn to the arts and culture than to military affairs, faced an extremely tense geopolitical situation. The alliance formed with the Jurchen of the Jin Dynasty against the Liao Dynasty, known as the Maritime Alliance (1120), proved disastrous: although the Liao were indeed defeated in 1125, the Jin quickly turned against the Song. The military weakness of the regime and internal instability deeply undermined the empire. From 1125 onwards, Jin armies invaded Song territories, forcing Huizong to abdicate in favour of his son, heralding the imminent fall of Kaifeng in 1127 and the end of the Northern Song Dynasty.
