The 1973 Canadian $1 bill features a distinctive design on both sides. The front of the bill is adorned with a black frame embellished with abstract motifs, framing the numerals "1" which indicate the face value. The multicoloured print, often referred to as "rainbow printing," adds an aesthetic dimension to the bill. Each bill is identifiable by a unique seven-digit serial number, preceded by a prefix of two or three letters. Notably, the serial number on the left is printed in red, while the one on the right appears in blue.
The coat of arms of Canada is reproduced on the left side of the bill. On the right, there is a portrait of Elizabeth II, Queen of England and the Commonwealth, highlighting the link between Canada and the British monarchy. The Latin inscriptions include the mentions "BANK OF CANADA - BANQUE DU CANADA", "UN 1 ONE DOLLAR", "CANADA", "OTTAWA", "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER CE BILLET A COURS LEGAL", as well as the year of issue "1973". The signatures of the Deputy Governor ("SOUS-GOUVERNEUR DEPUTY GOVERNOR") and the Governor ("GOUVERNEUR GOVERNOR") are also present.
The back of the bill offers a panoramic view of Parliament Hill and the city of Ottawa, as they appear from the Ottawa River. Abstract shapes, similar to those on the front, are arranged on the right and left, integrating the values "1", "ONE" and "UN". The dimensions of the bill are 156 mm in length and 70 mm in width.
