This Brazilian banknote has a face value of 1 cruzado novo. It was issued in 1989.
The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908), a renowned Brazilian writer. To the left of the portrait, there is a handwritten excerpt from chapter XXXII - The Retiree, taken from his work "Esaú et Jacó" (1904). This excerpt is superimposed on the emblem of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. A triangular stamp indicating the value of 1 new cruzado is also present.
The following inscriptions appear on the obverse: "BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL", followed by an excerpt from Machado de Assis's text, "Viverei com o Cattete, o Largo do Machado, a Praia de Botafogo e a do Flamengo, não falo das pessoas que lá moram, mas das ruas, das casas, dos chafarizes e das lojas. Lá os meus pés andam por si. Há ali coisas petrificadas e pessoas imortais". It also includes "CASA DA MOEDA DO BRASIL", the value "1 CRUZADO NOVO", the mentions "PRESIDENTE DO CONSELHO MONETÁRIO NACIONAL", "PRESIDENTE DO BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL", "DEUS SEJA LOUVADO", the name "MACHADO DE ASSIS", and the value "1000 MIL CRUZADOS".
The reverse of the banknote depicts a view of Primeiro de Março Street in Rio de Janeiro, formerly known as Direita Street. This representation is based on a photograph dating from 1905. The dimensions of the banknote are 154 × 74 mm.
The banknote belongs to Series B-A.
