Banknote Billet France 1 1914

Remarks:

1 pli

This 1 Franc banknote was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne on 23 November 1914, in the midst of the First World War. It reflects the particular context of the monetary shortage that struck France from the very beginning of the conflict, prompting numerous local chambers of commerce to issue their own emergency banknotes in order to compensate for the lack of small change in circulation.

These local issues, known as emergency currency or chamber of commerce notes, represented a pragmatic response to the economic disruptions caused by general mobilisation and the hoarding of metal coins by the population. The Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne, located in the Aude department, was among the many French local institutions that resorted to this measure to ensure the smooth flow of commercial exchanges in their area.

This banknote bears the mention ANNULÉ (CANCELLED), indicating that it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuer. This cancellation procedure was common at the end of the period of use of these notes, when the monetary situation normalised and emergency issues were recalled. The presence of this mention gives the note a particular documentary and historical status, testifying to its official withdrawal from the fiduciary circuit.

From a numismatic point of view, chamber of commerce notes from the 1914-1918 period are today sought-after collectibles, particularly for their direct testimony on local economic organisation in wartime. The precise date of 23 November 1914, printed on the note, places this issue within the first months of the conflict, a particularly critical period for the French economy.
