This 1 franc note was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Béthune on 4 October 1915, in the midst of the First World War. It is a Specimen example, making it a particularly rare and remarkable document in the field of French numismatics.

During the 1914-1918 conflict, the shortage of metallic currency led to the issuance of numerous emergency notes at the local level. French chambers of commerce were authorised to issue these paper currencies in order to compensate for the lack of liquidity circulating in daily commercial exchanges. The Chambre de Commerce de Béthune, located in northern France in a region particularly affected by the fighting, took part in this emergency monetary effort by producing its own denominations.

The « Specimen » overprint on this note indicates that it was intended for reference or presentation purposes, and not for ordinary circulation. Such specimens were generally produced in very limited quantities, which gives them considerable documentary and historical value today. They allow for precise study of the typography, graphic composition, and security features specific to the issue in question.

This note thus represents a direct testimony to local economic organisation in wartime, reflecting the ability of regional institutions to maintain a functional exchange system under exceptionally difficult circumstances. The Béthune region, close to the front, experienced major economic disruptions, making these emergency issues all the more crucial for the civilian population and local traders.

From a conservation and numismatic study perspective, a specimen of this type constitutes a primary source of the highest order for documenting the monetary practices of France during the period 1915.
