The Vatican State Mint is continuing its series of coins dedicated to the twelve apostles by issuing a €5 coin featuring Saint Philip this year. Artist Luigi Oldani has depicted the apostle in his old age, symbolised by his long beard and hunched shoulders. On the right-hand side of the coin is the cross, symbolising his martyrdom. Saint Philip followed Jesus from the beginning of his ministry until his Ascension. The New Testament does not provide many details about him, but according to tradition, Philip, like the other apostles, travelled to different regions to spread Christianity. He went as far as Scythia (near present-day Ukraine), then Phrygia (in present-day Turkey), to the latter's capital, Hierapolis, where he was martyred by crucifixion upside down on the orders of a Roman proconsul.
