The Vatican's series of eight euro coins, issued in 2011, features the effigy of Pope Benedict XVI. Each coin, from 1 cent to 2 euros, sports a distinctive design while sharing a common theme related to the papacy of Benedict XVI.
The 1, 2 and 5 cent coins depict the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI. The papal coat of arms is a set of heraldic emblems that symbolize the power and authority of the pope as head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.
On the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins, we find the effigy of Pope Benedict XVI, depicted in profile. The portrait is made with particular attention to detail, capturing the distinctive features of the pope's face.
The 1 and 2 euro coins also feature the portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, but with a slightly different composition. The effigy is surrounded by the twelve stars symbolizing the European Union, as well as the year of issue, 2011. The name of the issuing country, "Città del Vaticano", is also inscribed.
All the coins in this series are struck with great precision, reflecting the Vatican's minting expertise. The materials used to manufacture these coins are those commonly used for euro coins, namely copper-plated steel for the small denominations, Nordic gold for the intermediate ones, and cupronickel for the larger ones.
