The Vatican State Mint is dedicating the bi-metallic five-euro coin to the centenary of the death of Pope Benedict XV. Giacomo della Chiesa was born in Genoa in 1854 and was elected Pope in 1914 just three months after being appointed cardinal. He became Pope shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. For most of his almost eight-year pontificate he made many impassioned appeals for an end to the war. On the reverse of the coin, artist Patrizio Daniele has depicted Benedict XV in profile, hands clasped in prayer, with the following words: "War is a useless massacre". This phrase is taken from a letter written by the Pope in 1917 addressed "to the belligerent powers". The Pope invited them to reflect on their grave responsibilities before God and humanity. He wrote many letters urging them to end the war, but his appeals went unheeded. He also worked to improve care for the wounded and the many prisoners of war, and to help the civilian populations most affected by the war.

From 2002 to 2005, the effigy of John Paul II appeared on all the face values;
From 2006 to 2013, the effigy of Benedict XVI can be seen on all the face values;
From 2014 to 2016, the effigy of Francis I can be seen on all face values;
From 2017 the coat of arms of Pope Francis I can be seen on all face values.
