The 20-euro copper coin in the "Art and Faith" series has been enhanced this year with a detail of the dome of St Peter's Basilica. On the reverse of the coin, artist Cristina De Giorgi has reproduced the upper elevation of the basilica's façade, showing the dome in all its majesty. On either side are the two smaller domes and the 13 statues that adorn the balustrade above the main entrance to St Peter's Basilica. Many renowned architects and artists contributed to the design and construction of the dome from the early 1500s and for almost a century: Donato Bramante, Raffaello Sanzio and, above all, Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is one of the largest masonry roofs ever built, a symbol both of the Church of Rome and of human creativity.
