The Camargue is a breed of small, hardy, grey-coated saddle horses, native to the region of the same name in the south of France at the Rhone delta, in the departments of Gard and Bouches-du-Rhône. This horse traditionally lives free in its native marshes. Its origins remain a mystery, although it is considered to be one of the oldest breeds in the world.
Mentioned as far back as Roman antiquity, the Camargue was sometimes used as a pack and war horse until the 12th century. The inhabitants of the Camargue used them to plough grain, pull carriages and work with cattle, before releasing them into semi-freedom. As soon as they were created, the national stud farms set up a number of breeding programmes aimed at increasing the horse's size through cross-breeding to make it a war horse, but these programmes ended in failure.
After a period of decline in the first half of the 20th century, the Camargue has now become a saddle horse breed recognised by the French national stud farms and, above all, one of the strong symbols of its region of origin, along with the Camargue bull and the pink flamingo. The Camargue horse is still bred in semi-liberty in manades, and is the exclusive mount of the region's gardians, who use it to work the cattle and take part in numerous popular festivals. The Camargue horse enjoys a high profile thanks to horse-riding and its strong image of tradition and freedom, which is reflected in the arts and literature, notably in the story of Crin-Blanc.
