This 50 dollar bill, issued by the Canal Bank of New Orleans, dates from a period between 1841 and 1895. It belongs to the category of obsolete banknotes, a form of non-refundable currency issued without guarantee, characteristic of the era.
The front of the bill features a central allegory of a figure seated near goods in a port, with ships visible in the distance. On the sides, there are variations of this allegory on the left and an allegorical representation of Justice on the right. The Latin inscriptions include the name of the bank, "CANAL BANK", followed by "The New Orleans Canal & Banking Comp.?". The promise of payment is stated as follows: "Will pay Fifty Dollars to the bearer on demand". Space for the date and signatures of bank officials is also present: "New Orleans _____ 18__ _____ Cash.? _____ Pres.?".
The back of the bill displays the abbreviated name of the bank, "CANAL BANK", as well as the mention "NEW-ORLEANS" and the numerical value "50". The name of the printer, "Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York", is also mentioned. It should be noted that some of these banknotes were cut more widely and may have folded edges on the back, a characteristic visible on some copies.
The dimensions of this banknote are 189 mm in length and 79 mm in width.
