Description

This banknote originates from the United States and was issued in 1862. It is a note from the Mechanics Savings & Loan Association.

The face value of this note is 50 cents. However, the note clearly displays the mention "$5 Dollars" on its surface. This apparent contradiction can be explained by the economic context of the time, where local banks often issued their own notes, and the dollar value could be linked to the value in cents or other internal reference systems of the issuing institution.

On the left side of the note, there is a depiction of George Washington on horseback, an iconic figure in American history. The right side of the note features an industrial scene. This scene illustrates a factory in operation, with a chimney emitting smoke and a moving train, symbolizing the industrial and economic progress of the time.

The banknote has handwritten inscriptions in brown ink, including a signature and other annotations. These inscriptions add a unique character to the note and attest to its use and circulation at the time of its issuance.

The note number is 1674 and it is signed by H. Wetherell and I. A. Gove.
