This 1954 10 US dollar banknote belongs to the 521 series of Military Payment Certificates (MPC). These banknotes were used by American military personnel in certain areas abroad to prevent the black market in US dollars.
The obverse of the banknote features a complex design composed of lines and geometric shapes in dominant shades of green. The face value, "10", is repeated several times in numbers on the note. The words "Military Payment Certificate" are also visible. The name of the issuing country, the United States of America, does not appear on this type of banknote.
On the reverse, the design follows the same pattern of lines and geometric shapes as the obverse, again in shades of green. The face value of "TEN" is written out in full in the center of the note, framed by ornamental motifs. As on the obverse, the indication "Military Payment Certificate" is present.
This 1954 $10 MPC banknote was intended for temporary use and had a limited validity period. MPC series were regularly replaced with new series in order to control their use and prevent illegal activities. The state of preservation can vary considerably from one banknote to another, depending on its circulation and storage.
The peculiarity of this banknote lies in its specific use within the American armed forces deployed abroad. It bears witness to an era and a monetary strategy implemented for reasons of security and economic control.
