The Jefferson nickel is an iconic coin in American numismatics, whose design is based on iconographic elements directly linked to the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Struck in 2026 by the Philadelphia Mint, this five-cent coin is part of the long tradition of this coin type introduced in 1938.
The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, depicted facing forward in a modernised version of the design adopted in 2006. This portrait, based on a bust sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon, highlights the president's features with the detailed rendering characteristic of United States Mint productions.
The reverse is adorned with a representation of Monticello, the famous neoclassical home designed and inhabited by Thomas Jefferson in Virginia, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This architectural facade, recognisable by its central dome and columns, is accompanied by the inscription "MONTICELLO" as well as the face value "FIVE CENTS".
The mint mark "P" clearly identifies this issue as originating from the Philadelphia Mint, one of the oldest and most important minting institutions in the United States.
From a technical standpoint, this coin has a diameter of 21.21 mm and a weight of 5 grams. It is composed of cupronickel, an alloy combining copper and nickel, which gives the coin its characteristic silver-like colour and good resistance to wear. This composition has been used for the Jefferson nickel since its creation, with the exception of the period 1942?1945 when a silver alloy was temporarily adopted due to the constraints of World War II.
The face value of this coin is 5 cents, or $0.05 USD.
